    Is plaquenil safer than methotrexate

Yesterday my rheumatologist started me on hydroxychloroquine as well. Is anyone else on this combination and have you had any problems with it as I know hydroxychloroquine can cause eye sight problems.

When monotherapy with a synthetic DMARD isn’t working well enough, consider a triple combination of hydroxychloroquine, methotrexate, and sulfasalazine. It works better than a two-drug combination methotrexate with either drug. If a particular preparation is ineffective after a 4-week trial or is not tolerated, then another NSAID can be initiated. No one NSAID has been demonstrated to be better than another for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis nor have the COX-2 agents been shown to be superior to traditional NSAIDS in terms of effectiveness. Usual Time to Effect Plaquenil is better than Sulfazalizine but the Arava is still more effective than the Plaq. Can't imagine Plaquenil by itself being very effective for moderate to severe. only good for mild cases. Keep in mind that Arava can really take a full three months to acheive full effectiveness. keep taking Plaq until then.

Recently my eyes have felt sore and, after posting a question on this site, I am seeing my GP on Monday. Thanks Hi Catjones I have been taking this combination, started on both of them in January this year.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® is used for rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® is an antibiotic used to treat malaria, but it also works to treat symptoms of RA, lupus, and other rheumatic diseases. It can reduce your joint pain and swelling. With Plaquenil, the possibility of permanent vision damage scares me. I also want to be sure that I'm taking a drug that will slow/stop the progression of the disease. I've read elsewhere that Plaquenil is not as strong/effective in the treatment of early RA. With Methotrexate, the reports of nausea and possible liver damage are concerning. Hydroxychloroquine Could Cut Recurrence of Congenital Heart. Nov 14, 2019 MD Magazine What were the implications of your study examining the effects of hydroxychloroquine on recurrence of congenital heart block? Izmirly I think the overall implications are that if you've had a previously affected child with heart block, that our data shows that if you take hydroxychloroquine, you reduce your recurrence rate by more than 50% from a historical rate that we used.
