In the UK an estimated 8.5 million people are affected by OA, causing an enormous burden to health authorities, as well as considerable pain and disability to these individuals. A recent study by Arthritis Care reported that 81% of people with OA experience constant pain and 72% have important related conditions, such as high blood pressure or depression.

Mar 02, 2013 HERO was designed as an investigator-initiated multicentre, randomized, double-blindplacebo-controlled trial to compare the analgesic efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in painful hand OA. Participants will be randomized on a 11 basis to hydroxychloroquine or placebo. The Prospective Open Label Preventive Approach to Congenital Heart Block with Hydroxychloroquine PATCH Study demonstrates a reduction in the recurrence rate of advanced block. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

However, despite the prevalence of hand OA, there are still limited treatment options. Hand OA is generally considered to be less important and less disabling than knee or hip OA, but 8% of the UK population are estimated to be effected by painful hand OA, with a large proportion reporting significant difficulties with common day-to-day tasks, leading to reduced capacity to work and impacting on both quality of life and general health.

  5. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is used routinely for treating synovitis in inflammatory arthritis. The primary aim of the HERO RCT was to determine the effectiveness of HCQ as an analgesic treatment for hand OA, and secondarily to determine if synovitis was associated with treatment response, effects on structural progression and cost-effectiveness.

My new rheumy called today and said that my bloodwork was "all over the place." Also said that I have a positive rheumatoid factor, but that does not mean I necessarily have RA. You can do a drug search to get info, depending on which type you've been prescribed. I browsed news & found that tidbit came out about a week ago, on/about the 19th of July. But I read that LDL level is now (1) for patients at *high risk* of heart disease, 100 or lower, or possibly even 70 or lower, circumstances depending; (2) for patients at *moderate risk* of heart disease, 130 or lower, or possibly even 100 or lower, circustances depending; and (3) for low-risk patients, no change. All my best, Vee (edited to fix the figures I quoted, because my eyes and my brain have disconnected today... Men usually run 40 to 50 mg/dl, while women run 50 to 60. I'm awfully glad you have a doctor now who is actually treating you. My friend just started a statin, after trying unsuccessfully to bring her values down for several years via exercise and diet modifications. You could start your question list now & keep adding/editing right up until your that appt. I'm not sure why he is waiting, all the bloodwork is in. I'm glad to hear that Plaquenil lowers cholesterol - 15%-20% is terrific. As for starting the meds in Sept., I guess he didn't want to go over everything on the phone. I used to have a single article on cholesterol that I kept in my own health notebook.
