    Is plaquenil safe for pregnancy

The association between HCQ use and pregnancy outcomes (early spontaneous abortion, fetal death, and preterm and term live birth) was analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE) accounting for the occurrence of multiple pregnancies per patient. Analyses were adjusted for antiphospholipid antibody (a PL) status. 110 pregnancies (63 mostly Caucasian patients) were included, of which, in 30, HCQ was used; overall occurrence of flares was low (non-HCQ group: 5 mild (6.4%) and 2 severe (2.6%); HCQ group: 2 mild (6.7%) and no severe flares).

Hydroxychloroquine Pregnancy Warnings Animal studies have revealed evidence of fetal harm. Use of chloroquine and other 4-aminoquinolines in high doses and for prolonged durations has been associated with neurological disturbances and interference with hearing, balance, and vision in the fetus. Currently on plaquenil and pregnant. I was on plaquenil and remicade before getting pregnant but stopped remicade a few months ago and I’m currently waiting to start Cimzia which is safer for pregnancy and breastfeeding. My symptoms are currently very mild and baby is doing fine. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

Apart from disease flares during pregnancy, SLE patients have an increased risk of intrauterine growth restriction (OR 2.6), (pre)eclampsia (OR 3.0), and preterm birth (OR 2.4) compared to the healthy population [1]. The HCQ group showed a trend towards lower dosage of prednisone (OR 0.2 (95% CI 0.0–1.4); Pregnancy constitutes a challenge in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
