Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. Sulfasalazine enters breast milk in very small amounts. Use of the drug during lactation has been judged to be safe. 2 Azathioprine is excreted into breast milk and the manufacturer notes that the drug should not be used in nursing women. 2 Both methotrexate and leflunomide are contraindicated should not be used in women who are lactating. 2 Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine and Azulfidine EN-tabs sulfasalazine delayed release tablets are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Plaquenil is also used to treat or prevent malaria, and to treat symptoms of discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Azulfidine EN-tabs is also used to treat moderate to severe ulcerative colitis.

The study is based on sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine sulfate the active ingredients of Sulfasalazine and Plaquenil, respectively, and Sulfasalazine and Plaquenil the brand names. Other drugs that have the same active ingredients e.g. generic drugs are not considered. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Conventional DMARDs that have been paired with methotrexate include sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine, cyclosporine, leflunomide and azathioprine. Although studies of these combinations have shown differing levels of benefit, the combinations of methotrexate plus leflunomide and methotrexate plus sulfasalazine are among the most effective.
